YouTube has decided to take its generosity in showing ads to its users to the next level. The platform, which has been waging war on ad blocker apps for a while, has finally started offering one-hour ads.
YouTube will show longer ads
Users have filed new complaints about YouTube ads lasting for hours, interrupting their viewing experience. Shared screenshots revealed that the ads lasted between one and three hours and that it was impossible to skip them.
Initially, suspicion fell on YouTube, with some suggesting that the long ads were a tactic to steer users to an ad-free Premium subscription. However, investigations revealed that ad blockers were the likely culprit.
Users who reported these long ads confirmed that they were using ad blocking software. These programs were found to be malfunctioning and unable to correctly identify ads, resulting in long playback times.
In this context, it is possible to say that there was no deliberate move by the platform and that there was a technical problem between ad blockers and YouTube’s ad system. Although long ads lead to a negative user experience, it seems that YouTube is not to blame.
There is no official statement from Google and YouTube yet. However, it seems that very soon, when you pause a video on both mobile and web browser, new ads will appear like a lightning ball.
