Although people feel safe while surfing on the internet, the latest confession by the FBI revealed that nothing is safe. At the committee, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) asked Wray, “Does the FBI purchase US phone-geolocation information?” Then Wray confessed that the FBI bought the location data of US citizens for once without permission and obtaining a warrant.

FBI Director Christopher Wray answered, “I understand that we previously—as in the past—purchased some such information for a specific national security pilot project. But that’s not been active for some time.” He also added that the FBI doesn’t currently buy the location data of citizens, and they don’t have a plan to change that.

Electronic Frontier Foundation Senior Staff Attorney Adam Schwartz told about this case in a journal, “US government agencies must not be allowed to do an end run around the Fourth Amendment by buying private information from data brokers who collect information about the precise movements of hundreds of millions of people without their knowledge or meaningful consent.”
