Meta is rumored to have made operational changes at Reality Labs, a company working on virtual and augmented reality technologies. Accordingly, hundreds of people were reportedly laid off from the silicon chip manufacturing unit known as Facebook Agile Silicon Team (FAST).
Meta starts layoffs for Reality Labs
Meta carries out its software and hardware work for the AR/VR world through Reality Labs. FAST, a subdivision of this company, reportedly sent layoff notices to 600 employees. FAST is responsible for chip production for Quest devices.
The company already cooperates with companies such as Qualcomm to supply chips for virtual reality glasses such as the Quest series. However, it was stated that Meta’s chip work has been restructured. Accordingly, there are competing specialized processors within the company.
The layoffs have also hit Meta’s metaverse initiatives. Among the projects that could be affected is AR technology, a favorite of Mark Zuckerberg. Progress on such next-generation devices could be slowed by layoffs in the FAST team.
The round of 600 layoffs follows Zuckerberg’s previous statements. It was stated that Meta wanted to part ways with 10 thousand people a while ago and it was stated that it would do this within the year. It was also claimed that some executives working in chip-oriented artificial intelligence units quit their jobs.
Job losses in the FAST team are likely to slow down key technologies for Meta’s metaverse goals. However, there is no official statement from the company yet.
