With rising prices, energy consumption of gaming consoles has become an important factor for players. A new study conducted in the US compares the energy efficiency and annual costs of popular consoles.

The study measured the power consumption of consoles based on a standard usage scenario, including two hours of gaming per day, one hour of streaming, four hours in sleep mode, and 17 hours in shutdown mode. The results revealed that the Nintendo Switch OLED is the most energy-efficient console, while the PlayStation 5 consumes the most energy.
Nintendo Switch OLED consumes only 10.37 watt-hours annually, resulting in a cost of just $1.79 per year (based on US standards). Thanks to OLED screen technology, it offers vibrant colors and deep contrasts while also improving energy efficiency.

It saves $30.63 annually compared to the PlayStation 5. The standard Nintendo Switch ranks second, consuming 11.132 watt-hours per year and costing only $1.98 annually. On the Microsoft side, the Xbox One S consumes 76.467 watt-hours annually, leading to an annual cost of $13.61.
Among Sony’s PlayStation family, the PlayStation 4 consumes 83.329 watt-hours annually, resulting in a cost of $14.83. The more advanced PlayStation 4 Pro increases the energy consumption to an annual cost of $24.46. The PlayStation 5, at the bottom of the list, burns through $32.42 annually.
