Google is working on a new feature to make the Messages app more functional. With this innovation, users will be able to manage their message backups more easily. As with WhatsApp, there will now be a visual bar showing the backup space and users will be able to see how much space their messages take up on the device.
Google Messages is getting one step closer to WhatsApp day by day: Here’s what’s new
First discovered in beta by the Android Authority team, the feature is now available in Google Messages (version 20241118_02_RC00). The newly added Backup and Synchronization section allows users to easily manage backup operations.
This section will be located in the app settings between RCS Chats and Notifications. Users will be able to decide whether to save their messages to their Google account and whether to sync media files only over Wi-Fi or also on the mobile network.
In the past, such a feature might have been unnecessary for text-only messages. But with the development of the RCS standard, it is now possible to send messages with high-quality images and video. This leads to messages taking up more space on devices and in the cloud. This feature comes to solve exactly this problem.
When will it be available?
Google has not made an official statement about this feature, but we can easily say that it is in the final stages of development. The feature may soon be available to all users of the Google Messages app.
