Dyson has announced the world’s thinnest vacuum cleaner, the PencilVac. At first glance, this device looks more like a broom than a vacuum cleaner, and it houses all of the battery, motor, and electronic components in a thin handle measuring just 38mm in diameter.
This diameter is the same as the thickness of Dyson’s Supersonic r hair dryer. The device weighs under 4 pounds (approximately 1.8 kg) and is powered by the company’s smallest and fastest vacuum cleaner motor to date.

The PencilVac will replace the thin-designed Omni-glide model that Dyson launched in 2021. The Omni-glide was able to suck up dust and dirt from multiple directions thanks to its two rotating brush cleaning heads. The new PencilVac is both thinner and lighter than the Omni-glide, and uses four rotating brush bars that Dyson calls Fluffycones.

As the name suggests, the Fluffycones brushes have a conical design. This design means long hair falls to the narrow tip of each brush and is sucked up instead of tangled in the brushes. The Fluffycones brushes have slightly protruding sides for edge cleaning and are equipped with green LED lights (instead of the lasers on Dyson’s other vacuums). These lights illuminate dust and debris to show whether the floor has been cleaned properly.

Other innovations introduced by Dyson with the PencilVac include a motor that is just 28mm in diameter but spins at 140,000 RPM, producing 55AW suction power. The device also features a new two-stage dust filtration system that prevents blockages and loss of performance as the vacuum fills.
Due to its size, the PencilVac’s dust bin is smaller than Dyson’s other cleaners, but a new design that compresses the dust removed from the air maximizes the amount of dirt it can hold.
The PencilVac magnetically attaches to the floor cradle for charging and storage, and has a small LCD screen that shows the cleaning mode and the time left on the battery. It’s also the first vacuum to connect to Dyson’s MyDyson mobile app. The app offers access to additional settings, alerts for when the filter needs to be cleaned, and step-by-step maintenance instructions.
The vacuum’s slim design comes with some trade-offs compared to the company’s larger models. The cleaner head is designed for hard floors, not carpet. It can be swapped out for alternative accessories like a furniture and crevice tool, but it can’t be converted into a shorter handheld vacuum. Runtime is limited to just 30 minutes on the lowest power setting, but the battery is replaceable, and Dyson will sell additional batteries to extend the cleaning time.
Dyson has yet to announce pricing details. The PencilVac will be available in Japan later this year, but it won’t be available in the U.S. until 2026.
