New reports have emerged that Apple will significantly increase the memory (RAM) capacity of the upcoming iPhone 18. According to information shared by a South Korean media outlet, the new model could have 50% more memory compared to the previous generation. This potential increase indicates Apple’s increasing emphasis on on-device AI processing capabilities.
Apple Increases Memory in iPhone 18 Series: 50% RAM Increase
Apple’s latest iPhone 17 series, the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, feature 12GB of RAM. This represents a significant 4GB increase over their predecessors. The primary motivation for this upgrade was the increased memory requirements for on-device AI features. The standard iPhone 17 model continued to use 8GB of RAM.

According to the latest information, this will change with the iPhone 18 series. Apple is reportedly aiming for “memory parity” across all models in the iPhone 18 series. This strategy means that the standard iPhone 18 model is unlikely to come with 8GB of RAM. According to the report, Apple has contacted Samsung, a key RAM supplier for the iPhone. It is stated that Apple has requested an increase in its supply of LPDDR5X chips for the new iPhone series.
However, there is a technical reason why 8GB of RAM is unlikely in the standard model. Samsung’s high-performance LPDDR5X chips, which will be released in 2024, are only available in 12GB and 16GB configurations. This suggests that the standard iPhone 18 model will have at least 12GB of memory. If the standard model increases from 8GB to 12GB, this would represent a full 50% increase, confirming the report’s claim. Apple is also reportedly in talks with SK Hynix and Micron for additional mobile DRAM supplies.

The report also contains interesting details about Apple’s future launch schedule. The iPhone Air 2, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and foldable iPhone models are expected to be released in the fall of 2026. The standard models are claimed to be introduced in the first half of 2027. This suggests Apple may separate its launch strategy for the Pro and standard models.
In this context, Apple’s decision to equalize the RAM capacity of all iPhone 18 models could provide a significant performance boost, especially for users considering the standard model. Is 8GB of RAM now sufficient, or should 12GB become standard? Share your thoughts with us.
