Perplexity licenses images through Getty Images agreement

The artificial intelligence search engine will add licensed images to platform thanks to Perplexity Getty Images.

Perplexity, known as the AI-powered “answer engine,” has entered into a significant partnership with the visual content giant. The highly anticipated Perplexity-Getty Images agreement paves the way for the company to use licensed photos in its search results. This move comes amid ongoing debates surrounding AI copyrights.

This multi-year agreement grants Perplexity access to Getty Images’ extensive photo library. This library contains millions of images, ranging from current events to archival footage and creative stock photography. As a result, Perplexity will be able to supplement its user responses with these high-quality images.

Getty Images is selective about licensing with AI companies. It has even sued some companies, such as Stability AI, for unauthorized image use. However, this agreement with Perplexity demonstrates Getty’s prioritization of “commercially safe” partnerships. The agreement will ensure Getty Images receives both compensation and proper attribution of its images.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas stated that this partnership will improve the quality of responses by providing users with up-to-date, high-quality visuals. Furthermore, the agreement isn’t limited to visuals. Perplexity will also gain access to Getty’s APIs and technical support for training its AI models and licensing infrastructure.
