The world’s most popular messaging app is preparing a significant change to its user experience. According to recent reports, a new WhatsApp ad-free subscription model is currently being tested. This feature will offer users the option to completely remove advertisements within the app for a monthly fee, specifically targeting promotional content in the Status (Updates) tab. This move could mark a new chapter in Meta’s revenue and user strategy.
How Will the WhatsApp Ad-Free Subscription Work?
Discovered in the Android 2.26.3.9 beta version, this new feature is based on an optional subscription system. Users will have the choice to either continue with the current free, ad-supported experience or pay a monthly fee to switch to an ad-free interface. This model appears to be primarily aimed at complying with regulations in Europe and the United Kingdom. When a user subscribes, two types of promotional content will be removed from their Status tab:
- Status Ads: Advertisements that appear between viewing multiple status updates.
- Promoted Channels: Channels that creators pay to feature to reach a wider audience.
Consequently, subscribers will enjoy a completely seamless and organic experience in the Status tab. This step is seen as part of WhatsApp’s effort to create a sustainable revenue model while maintaining its commitment to user privacy. The company has previously stated that ads will never be personalized using private chats, calls, or group activities, but will instead be based on general signals like language and location.

Furthermore, the introduction of an ad-free subscription model is consistent with Meta’s overall strategy. Similar subscription options offered for Facebook and Instagram in Europe allow users to avoid ads based on data tracking. One of the most anticipated details is, of course, the cost of this service. Based on leaked screenshots, the monthly fee for WhatsApp’s ad-free subscription plan is expected to be around €4. Pricing may also vary depending on the country and whether the user’s WhatsApp account is linked to Meta’s Accounts Center.
Users will be able to purchase and manage their subscriptions directly within the app via the Google Play Store. This means the process will follow the standard procedure for other app subscriptions. Those who wish to cancel can do so easily through the subscriptions menu in the Google Play Store. WhatsApp notes that it may take up to 15 minutes for changes to be reflected in the account.
Since this feature is still under development, its public release date remains uncertain. However, WhatsApp is known to be working on making the subscription process as simple and intuitive as possible.
