Marvel Studios has taken a concrete step indicating its preparations for one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history, Wolverine. On December 12, 2025, the company filed a new trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the trademark “Wolverine.”
A new Wolverine film is on the horizon.
This application covers a wide range of categories, including film production, television programs, and multimedia entertainment content. Securing trademark rights in this way is considered the strongest indication yet that Marvel plans to bring the character to the big screen not just in supporting roles, but with a standalone project in which he will be the central focus. Industry analyses emphasize that this registration process is usually carried out just before the official announcement of major productions.

Discussions about the character’s future gained a new dimension with Hugh Jackman’s return in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Jackman, who bid farewell to the role with the 2017 film Logan, has been leaving the door open in recent interviews, stating that this farewell is not definitive and that there are still unexplored aspects of the character.
His statement, “I’ve learned never to say never,” in particular, increases expectations that the actor may continue to be involved in future phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, Marvel’s trademark move may signal not only a Jackman-focused continuation project, but also the foundations of a new X-Men universe to be established after “Secret Wars.”
The studio is expected to place the Wolverine character at the center of the new mutant saga, following a strategy similar to the past, starting with individual films and progressing towards a large team film.
