A new feature film project based on the John Wick universe has entered the preparatory stages. The studio has described the project as a “samurai-western” film and has entered the scripting phase. Austin Everett is writing the script.
A samurai-themed John Wick is coming
Screenwriter Everett announced that he is writing the project as a “samurai-western” film set in the John Wick universe. Beyond this statement, Everett did not share any details. This development indicates that Lionsgate is continuing its efforts to transform the series into a cinematic universe.

Lionsgate’s attempts to bring the John Wick franchise into a cinematic universe have so far not yielded the results the studio had hoped for. The first spin-off, Ballerina, grossed less than expected at the box office.
Following this commercial failure, rumors have surfaced that other previously planned John Wick spin-offs may also be shelved. However, despite the negative performance of the first film, the studio is not giving up on the franchise easily. Therefore, Lionsgate is beginning preparations for a new John Wick universe project.
The samurai and western genres have intersected repeatedly throughout cinematic history. There are examples of these genres merging, including director Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films. This suggests the project will follow a path similar to works like Yojimbo or the Sukiyaki Western Django.
The fact that the project will be a spin-off and likely set in the past suggests that the series’ main star, Keanu Reeves, is not expected to star in this film. Because the project is still in its infancy, the cast and other details have not yet been finalized.
