Aviation giant Airbus has launched a critical update process affecting thousands of its aircraft worldwide, requiring urgent action. The company has ordered the immediate software update of 6,000 A320 aircraft to address a detected issue related to solar flares. This mandatory directive has caused numerous flight disruptions and operational changes worldwide.
Solar flares hit aviation: 6,000 Airbus A320s undergo urgent updates
According to data shared by Reuters, this urgent update covers more than half of the total 11,300 A320 jets currently in operation. The narrow-body A320 is known as one of the most popular aircraft in the global aviation industry, highlighting the scale of the operation.

American Airlines, the world’s largest operator of the aircraft, announced that 340 of its 480 aircraft in its fleet need updates. This update, which coincides with one of the busiest travel weekends in the US, takes approximately two hours to update each aircraft. The airline stated that most of the aircraft will be completed overnight and operations will quickly return to normal.

The software update decision has also deeply impacted Asian carriers, which heavily use A320 models for short-haul flights. Japan-based airline ANA was forced to cancel 95 domestic flights scheduled for Saturday. More than 13,000 passengers were reportedly affected by these cancellations.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive following an issue that arose on a JetBlue flight on October 30. Detailed analysis by Airbus revealed that intense solar radiation can corrupt data critical to the operation of flight controls.
Solar flares, also known as bursts of electromagnetic radiation from the sun, are known to cause radio disruptions and disrupt GPS signals. To prevent this issue from recurring in the future and to prevent potential risks, it was announced that the software of the affected aircraft will be rolled back to a previous version.
