Amazon is making significant changes to its Prime Air drone delivery program. The company announced that it will close its Prime Air drone delivery operations in Lockeford, California. Lockeford was an early test site where local residents could receive drone deliveries within 30 minutes. What’s Amazon’s plan?
Amazon Ends Drone Deliveries in California
Amazon also plans to open a new Prime Air center in Phoenix, Arizona. The new facility in Tolleson, Arizona, is expected to offer “same-day” delivery later this year. There has been no clear explanation for why Prime Air operations in Lockeford are being closed.
The company mentioned that employees could find opportunities at other facilities but did not provide details on the reasons behind the region’s closure. Amazon’s press release stated that Prime Air operations would continue in College Station, Texas, and that new locations are planned for 2025.
Amazon’s new drone model, MK30, is lighter than previous models and can fly in light rain. MK30 was introduced in November 2022, as earlier models sometimes experienced issues with crashing and burning during testing.
The new drone is expected to be operational in 2024. However, while Amazon aimed for 10,000 drone deliveries at the start of 2023, it had only achieved 100 deliveries by mid-year. This low performance indicates that Amazon is struggling to meet its drone delivery targets.

In contrast, rival companies are achieving greater success. For instance, Zipline, a drone delivery company, announced that it had completed 1 million deliveries in 2024. Although Amazon was an early player in drone delivery, it may face more challenges in this increasingly competitive sector.
The future of Amazon’s Prime Air program will depend on the company’s ability to develop new technologies and strategies. Making drones safer and more efficient will be critical to Prime Air’s success.
Amazon will also need to ensure that drone deliveries are safe and effective to meet customer expectations. Otherwise, Amazon’s competitive edge in the aerial delivery sector could be lost.
