The US government’s new export restrictions on artificial intelligence chips have also directly affected AMD. The company’s new generation MI308 GPUs were added to the list of products that require special licenses for export with the latest regulation. AMD announced that it could face a financial loss of approximately $800 million following this decision.
AMD to lose approximately $800 million
Previously, Nvidia announced a loss of $5.5 billion due to similar restrictions. Both companies were trying to establish a presence in the Chinese market with special chips that did not exceed the technical limits set by the US. However, with the new regulation that went into effect in April 2025, Nvidia’s H20 model and AMD’s MI308 GPUs are now among the products that can only be exported with special permission.

Following the latest developments, AMD management announced that they will apply for the necessary licenses for the export of MI308 chips to China. However, it is not yet known under what conditions or when these licenses will be granted.
In addition, the new regulations cover not only China; Hong Kong, Macau and some other countries. This situation made the company’s sales potential in the region even more uncertain. On the other hand, the expectation of a loss also affected investors.
AMD shares lost approximately 7 percent of their value after the news. There are assessments in the market that this decline could deepen further if the uncertainties regarding the licensing process continue.
