Walt Disney Animation’s new film, “Zootopia 2,” is poised to surpass the $1 billion global box office mark, becoming only the second Hollywood production to reach this milestone by 2025.
Zootopia 2 has garnered significant interest
According to Disney estimates, the film, which follows the quirky rabbit cop Judy Hopps and the fox Nick Wilde as they hunt down a mysterious reptile, had grossed $232.7 million domestically and $753.4 million internationally by this weekend. With these figures, “Zootopia 2” becomes Disney’s second film this year to reach the $1 billion mark, following the live-action “Lilo & Stitch.”

This development, according to Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush, demonstrates the audience’s desire to experience the film together on the big screen. The only other film to surpass $1 billion this year was the Chinese animated film “Ne Zha 2,” which has grossed $2.2 billion since January.
Box office analysts note that reaching $1 billion in revenue has become more difficult again due to changing global market trends in recent years. In this context, the astonishing success of “Zootopia 2” in the Chinese market is of great significance.
The film generated a large portion of its global box office revenue, approximately $450 million, from China. In a market where restrictions on US films have increased in recent years, this revenue is considered a very large figure.
According to Disney, “Zootopia 2” achieved the highest-grossing animated opening of all time for a non-local film in China and broke the record for the highest-grossing non-local animated film in the country within its first five days of release.
This massive success also reveals a shift in the domestic film market. PG-rated family films are projected to surpass PG-13 and R-rated films at the box office by 2025. This year, PG films grossed $2.7 billion in the US and Canada, while PG-13 films grossed $2.5 billion and R-rated films grossed $2.4 billion.
