Apple is preparing to move on to the second generation of tracking technology after the first generation AirTag, which it introduced in 2021. The company is expected to announce the AirTag 2 model at the iPhone 17 launch event to be held in September this year.
AirTag 2 is officially here
One of the most striking innovations of the AirTag 2 is that it will offer more detailed warnings about the battery level of the device. In the first generation AirTag, the battery status could only be checked via Apple’s Find My app.

The new model will send notifications directly to the user for both low and very low battery levels. This feature will allow the AirTag’s battery to be renewed before it runs out completely. According to the first leaked information, the product will not carry a rechargeable battery and will continue to work with a replaceable battery.
The new AirTag also has a user-friendly structure in terms of software support. According to the details revealed in the iOS 18.6 beta version, AirTag 2 will not require a newer operating system such as iOS 26 to work. This means that existing iPhone users will be able to use AirTag 2 without upgrading their devices.
Apple seems to have prioritized user safety in this new model. It has been known for a while that malicious people have used AirTag as a tracking tool in various cases. Since it is possible to disable the speaker in the current AirTag, it was difficult for the person being secretly followed to notice this device.
In order to eliminate this problem, Apple is switching to a design that will make it difficult to physically remove the speaker in AirTag 2. The new device will also have Apple’s second-generation ultra-wideband (UWB) chip.
Thanks to this hardware, the range of the “Precise Find” feature is increased from the current 15 meters to 60 meters. Thus, AirTag 2 will allow lost items to be found in a much wider area and more precisely.
