Apple and Meta have been known as rival giants of the technology world for years. These two companies, which often clash on issues such as privacy and app store policies, seem to be moving towards an unexpected cooperation with developments in the field of artificial intelligence.
Apple and Meta’s artificial intelligence partnership: Big innovations coming in iOS 18
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple and Meta are in talks over the integration of Meta’s artificial intelligence models in iOS 18.
This potential partnership between Apple and Meta in the field of artificial intelligence has caused quite a stir in the tech world. Apple plans to use Meta’s AI models to further improve the user experience with iOS 18. Similar to Apple’s existing agreement with ChatGPT, this collaboration will be able to respond to users’ requests for more comprehensive and detailed information.
With Apple’s iOS 18 update, users will be able to get answers to complex questions they ask Siri from Meta’s AI models. For example, in response to a question such as “how do you prepare a five-course meal with five different flavors?” Siri can ask the user for permission to forward this request to Meta AI. If the user gives permission, the Meta AI model will process the request and display the response on the Siri screen.
This integration will work in a similar way to Apple’s current collaboration with ChatGPT. Users can use ChatGPT to create text or photorealistic images in the Apple Intelligence Authoring Tools panel. ChatGPT is not authorized to collect user data and must delete information after requests are processed. Users also have the option to sign in with their ChatGPT account to access ChatGPT Plus features.
Apple plans to offer different artificial intelligence models to its users in the future, not just limited to ChatGPT. According to the Wall Street Journal, Meta AI could be one of these models. Apple is also reportedly in talks with other AI providers such as Google Gemini, Perplexity and Anthropic. This diversity will allow users to access a wider pool of information.
Apple Intelligence will be available later this year with iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia updates. Initially available in US English, the feature will be available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPad with M1 chip and Mac models. Supported languages and regions will be expanded over time.
