There is a significant change in iPhone’s OLED panel supplies. According to industry sources, Chinese display manufacturer BOE faced quality issues. Accordingly, Apple will place more orders with long-time partner Samsung Display.
Apple increases Samsung orders for iPhone display
Apple has diversified its OLED panel suppliers for many years and tried to break the dominance of Samsung Display. The technology giant first started supplying panels from LG Display, then included BOE in the supply chain.
However, BOE’s recent difficulties in meeting Apple’s strict quality standards have led it to turn to Samsung. According to recent reports, BOE failed to fulfil its commitment to deliver 40 million OLED panels for non-Pro models such as the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 series.
BOE, which has been able to supply only 7-8 million panels since the beginning of 2024, has been well below its target. It is estimated that it may take at least six weeks to resolve quality issues. This will cause Apple to shift a significant portion of orders to Samsung Display.
Apple also supplies OLED panels from LG Display. However, LG Display mostly produces LTPO OLED panels for iPhone Pro models. Therefore, Samsung Display will benefit the most from the orders withdrawn from BOE.
This is not the first time BOE has faced quality problems in OLED panel supply. In 2023, the Chinese company had light leakage problems in Dynamic Island in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models.
