Apple is making a move that could make third-party iPhone repair more accessible. In this context, the company will allow certain iPhone models to be repaired with used parts. This part replacement will not affect the warranty.
Second-hand parts can be used for iPhone repairs
Until now, Apple has required a process called “part matching” when repairing an iPhone. This required matching the serial number of any replacement part to the device. This meant that used or resold parts could void the warranty.
It was also necessary to provide the original serial number when ordering parts from Apple. However, the company will remove this requirement and allow second-hand parts to be used for repairs. You will be able to install genuine Apple spare parts on your phone, whether new or used.
According to Apple, this expansion will initially apply to the display, battery and camera. In the future, it will be possible to use second-hand biometric sensors used for Face ID and Touch ID.
At the same time, Apple said it will use Activation Lock to keep track of iPhone parts. Repair history will also be stored on the phone. Thus, the details of the repair will be visible when selling the device.
Apple has made a very important move for both individual and third-party service points. It will allow users to access cheaper Apple components.
