All eyes in the tech world are once again on Apple and Meta as they refused to join the European Union’s (EU) Artificial Intelligence Treaty. While companies such as Google, OpenAI and Microsoft accepted the agreement, Apple and Meta abstained. So why is this deal so important and why are Apple and Meta holding back? Will the company not offer AI capabilities to Europe?
Apple and Meta refuse to join the EU’s AI deal
The EU Artificial Intelligence Treaty covers specific responsibilities and ethical principles for the development and use of artificial intelligence in Europe. The aim of the agreement is to ensure that AI systems are transparent, fair and reliable.
In particular, it aims to regulate high-risk AI systems and minimize their impact on human life. Companies participating in the agreement pledge to fulfill these responsibilities and work in line with the EU’s AI regulations.
But Apple and Meta refused to sign this agreement. This raises a serious problem. In particular, it could create some difficulties for Apple in making the new AI features in the iPhone 16 series available to EU users.
While the company says it is trying to comply with EU AI regulations, not joining the agreement could make Apple Intelligence unavailable in Europe. Likewise, Meta has chosen not to participate in the agreement.
In the tech world, it remains to be seen what the consequences of this move will be for Apple and Meta. While other big tech companies are joining the agreement and moving towards responsible AI development, Apple and Meta’s resistance could weaken the EU’s AI regulations.
