Apple Replaces iPhone Upgrade Program With New Leasing System

Apple has officially discontinued its traditional iPhone Upgrade Program in the United States, replacing it with a new leasing system operated in partnership with Klarna. This updated Apple Upgrade model allows U.S. residents to acquire a wide range of products, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, through a structured monthly payment plan. Unlike the previous ownership-focused model, this system functions as a formal lease, meaning the hardware remains the property of the financing providers for the duration of the agreement. This shift marks a significant change in how Apple manages customer device acquisition and hardware lifecycle management.
- The Apple Upgrade leasing program is currently restricted exclusively to residents of the United States.
- Users do not obtain legal ownership of the hardware until they pay the remaining balance at the end of the term.
- Klarna reserves the right to terminate the agreement and demand full payment if a user misses three consecutive installments.
- AppleCare+ coverage is no longer included in the monthly lease fee and must be purchased as a separate add-on.
Ownership Dynamics are Changing Under the New Model
The core of the new Apple Upgrade system revolves around a leasing structure rather than a direct purchase agreement. Throughout the duration of the contract, the user makes monthly payments while the legal title of the device remains with the financing entity. Once the lease period concludes, customers face a choice: they can return the hardware or pay off the remaining balance to assume full ownership. This model prioritizes flexibility for those who prefer upgrading to the latest technology annually over long-term ownership.
Failure to meet payment obligations for three consecutive months results in the account being escalated to a collections agency.
Payment Restrictions are Being Implemented
Under the terms established with Klarna, the program excludes traditional credit card payments. Participants must utilize bank debit cards or direct bank account withdrawals to fulfill their monthly obligations. Furthermore, the program prohibits the use of educational discounts or the purchase of refurbished items through this specific leasing channel. Although the initial screening process does not negatively impact credit scores, potential users are required to maintain an active post-paid mobile carrier plan to qualify for the program.
Device Damages are Managed by Klarna
The assessment of physical damage and technical issues is now managed entirely by Klarna, rather than Apple retail staff. Users who opt out of the AppleCare+ protection plan are held financially liable for any damages discovered upon the return of the device. Those who maintain an active AppleCare+ subscription enjoy reduced service fees for repairs. It is important to note that certain high-end or newly released device models are currently excluded from the program’s eligibility list.
Certain flagship devices remain unavailable for lease under the current program scope.
Legacy Users are Transitioning to the New System
Customers currently enrolled in the original iPhone Upgrade Program will retain their existing benefits until their next designated upgrade window. However, upon seeking a device replacement, these users will be required to transition to the new, Klarna-supported leasing framework. This migration signifies a permanent move toward a service-based model for hardware distribution.
Do you believe that moving from a purchase-based upgrade model to a lease-based system offers more convenience, or does it simply increase the long-term cost of owning an iPhone? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
