Apple has received a new patent on foldable display technologies. The US Patent and Trademark Office has officially approved this patent, which focuses on a smartphone with a fold-out design, as well as a flexible hinge structure. The patent also includes details on sliding or rollable screen designs. Details in our news…
Apple’s foldable iPhone patent folds outward and comes with modular hinge design
Starting with the display, Apple’s new foldable device concept will use flexible display technologies such as OLED. These displays are evenly integrated into two different parts of the device thanks to the hinge structure. The patent states that the hinge mechanism has moving parts such as gears and belts, which allow the screen to fold smoothly.
It is also emphasized that the virtual pivot points on the hinge system increase durability by reducing pressure on the screen. An interesting detail of the patent is that it has a support structure that allows the hinge parts to slide and move. In other words, it both increases the durability of the device when folded and prevents damage to the screen.
Although this patent focuses on the outward-folding design, Apple’s past applications also include inward-folding designs. We expect the company to expand this technology in the future with devices ranging from foldable smartphones to tablets and laptops. In addition, sliding and rollable screen designs will relatively diversify Apple’s innovations in the flexible display space.
