The iPhone Fold, also known as the Foldable iPhone, is finally taking shape. The first 3D CAD render files, allegedly belonging to the model that Apple has been working on for a long time with its “we never rush, we do our best” philosophy and is currently referred to as the iPhone Fold in tech circles, have been leaked online.
These images, shared on X by Sonny Dickson, known for his reliable Apple leaks, provide the clearest clues yet about how Apple plans to enter the foldable smartphone market with its hardware.
Asymmetric Lines and an ‘iPhone Air’-Inspired Camera Setup
Upon closer inspection of the leaked 3D CAD files, we see that Apple has adopted a design language that is quite different from its competitors and distinctly its own. On the back of the device, there is a camera island (plateau) that rises slightly from the case, similar to the ultra-thin ‘iPhone Air’ model expected to be unveiled this year.
However, unlike the single-lens setup on the iPhone Air, the iPhone Fold features a dual camera setup positioned side by side. It appears that Apple has sacrificed the triple camera module (and probably the telephoto lens) in order to keep the thickness to a minimum in its foldable form factor.
One of the most striking details of the design is the asymmetrical lines in the case structure. While two corners of the device feature Apple’s classic rounded (curved) lines, the other two corners, where the screens meet at the hinge, are designed to be completely flat and angular (square). This flattened edge design points to an engineering marvel of a hinge system developed to ensure a seamless closure when folded and to integrate the folding mechanism into the case much more smoothly.
Screen Details: Punch-Hole Design and Extended Form
Important details are also hidden in the schematics showing the device in its open (tablet form) state. A small dot (punch-hole screen design) reserved for the front camera stands out in the upper left corner of the inner screen.
This suggests that Apple may be leaning towards a more minimalist camera solution for the massive internal screen of the foldable model, at least, instead of a Face ID notch or Dynamic Island. On the external screen side, it appears that the device will continue to offer a full-fledged smartphone experience when closed and will have a much wider aspect ratio compared to existing foldable competitors on the market.
When Will It Be Unveiled and How Much Will It Cost?
According to industry insiders, the leak of CAD files, which are vital for accessory and case manufacturers, at this time of year is quite common and proves that the device is rapidly moving towards mass production. Based on recent market reports and analyst expectations, Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable phone this fall alongside the highly anticipated iPhone 18 series.
Considering the high R&D costs associated with foldable technology, ultra-thin glass (UTG) panels, and massive battery requirements, the iPhone Fold is expected to exceed the $2,000 mark, making it the most expensive smartphone in Apple’s history. After years of anticipation, we now have only a few months to see what kind of “revolution” Apple will bring to this market.
