Audi continues to cancel its popular sports car models. The company, which ended the production of the Audi TT a while ago, now said that the last Audi R8 model has come off the line. Thus, the vehicle, which was first produced in 2003, was shelved.
An era closed for Audi R8
It’s the end of an era for Audi’s iconic sports car. The German automotive giant has announced that the last R8 model has left the production line. The last vehicle produced at the Böllinger Höfe plant in Germany was the V10-powered Performance Quattro Edition in Vegas Yellow.
First launched in 2003, the Audi R8 established the German brand as a serious player in the automobile market. Powered by the company’s legendary 5.2-liter V10 engine, the R8 offered exciting performance at a more affordable price than Lamborghini and Ferrari.
The R8 has contributed greatly to Audi’s sporty image during its 21-year lifespan. Despite halving its sales in its last year, it sold less than 2,000 units last year. This means it is Audi’s slowest-selling model.
And with emissions regulations and electrification pressures in Europe and the US, Audi has decided it’s time to cancel its iconic model.
Audi has not yet announced whether the R8 will be the successor model. However, the end of production of this vehicle means that Volkswagen AG has also given up on the 5.2-liter V10 engine.
