Larian Studios’ legendary RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 has been one of the most remarkable productions of the year. However, the demand for a port on mobile platforms despite the game’s high hardware requirements seems to have attracted the attention of scammers. Recently, a fake mobile game in the name of Baldur’s Gate 3 appeared on the iOS store and targeted users.
How does the fake Baldur’s Gate 3 scam players?
This fake app, released in November 2024 under the name ‘Baldur’s Gate 3 – Mobile Turuk’, lures users into a subscription fee trap despite appearing to be free. The fake app’s description states that players can create a character from various D&D classes or play with characters that come with pre-made stories. However, the app’s sole purpose is to force users to pay a monthly subscription fee of $29.99… Indeed, none of these features are in the game.
The fake game is not only a money trap, but also a data security risk. The app’s terms of service clearly states that users’ IP addresses and other data are collected. This suggests that the fake app may not only lead to financial losses, but also privacy violations.
Larian Studios had previously announced that a mobile port of Baldur’s Gate 3 was not planned. While this does not mean that such a port will not be possible in the future, it is a reminder that players should only trust information from official sources.
Apple’s iOS refund system offers a powerful solution for victims. However, for users who are not familiar with this system, these fake applications can cause serious financial losses.
