The Xenormorph banking malware that emerged in Europe last year is back on the agenda, according to cybersecurity researchers. The malware attack, which runs on Android and Google Chrome update, tries to trick users through the update.
This malware attack appears to be a Google Chrome update
A new report shows that the Xenomorph malware attack has resurfaced. The new malware, seen in the US and Europe, aims to steal cryptocurrency and banking information.
When Xenomorph first appeared in 2022, it fooled more than 50,000 Android users by impersonating popular apps. Proving to be a threat that can bypass Android’s security protections, the malware appears to be back again.
It was stated that it was redeveloped to take control of popular Android devices. The latest attack directs Chrome users to a phishing page that tells them they need to update the app.
This page downloads a malicious APK that can steal usernames, passwords and credit card numbers through hidden screen overlays. The APK is specifically named to look like a Chrome update.
According to researchers, financial institutions and cryptocurrency apps are in the crosshairs of the new version of Xenomorph. Worse, the malware has been installed on thousands of devices in Europe and the US. We recommend updating Chrome only from trusted sources such as the Google Play Store.
