Apple is receiving heavy criticism for its Fountain of Youth film, which it produced with a budget of approximately $200 million. The production, in which famous director Guy Ritchie was behind the camera, was one of the most notable Apple TV+ projects of 2025. However, the low scores the film received from both critics and viewers show that Apple did not receive the response it expected from this project.
The new Apple TV+ production received heavy criticism
The film, starring John Krasinski, Natalie Portman and Eiza Gonzalez, is about two long-lost siblings searching for the legendary Fountain of Youth. The story of the siblings, who follow clues in historical sources, takes them on an adventure that extends to different corners of the world.
This story, which is set in the style of a modern Indiana Jones, was designed to be similar to major productions with box office potential. However, it was notable that the production was not released to audiences in movie theaters during the marketing process. Apple released the film only on Apple TV+.
The film, which received a 37% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, also received a score of 41 on MetaCritic. Audience reviews also appear negative. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes has dropped to 44%.
Film critics state that the story does not offer enough depth and that character development is weak. Apple’s decision to release the film directly on a digital platform, considering the platform’s limited subscriber base, was a factor that reduced the production’s chances of reaching a wide audience.
