Apple, after a long-awaited anticipation, has announced a new version of Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra chip. This indicates the completion of the Apple Silicon transition. Additionally, Apple is no longer selling any Intel Macs. According to rumors, macOS will also cease support for Intel Macs. Here are the details!
Apple has transitioned all Macs to Apple Silicon
In November 2020, Apple released the M1 chip, which marked the beginning of a new era with Apple Silicon. Initially, the company planned to complete the transition within two years, but there have been several delays due to various reasons.
The first Intel Mac was announced in January 2006, and the transition to Intel was completed in August 2006. The following year, Apple released Mac OS X Leopard, the final version of the operating system that supported PowerPC Macs. In 2009, Mac OS X Snow Leopard officially ended support for these Macs and became the first version to require an Intel processor.
As time went on, the company needed a more efficient and powerful processor. As a result, they began working on their own chips for the iPad and iPhone. In 2020, Apple announced that it had transitioned the Mac’s architecture from Intel to Apple Silicon, its own ARM-based chips.
The first Apple Silicon Macs were introduced in November 2020 with the M1 chip. The company initially stated that this transition would be completed by 2022, but it seems to have taken a bit longer. Now, the company has transitioned the entire Mac lineup to Apple Silicon chips. This raises questions about whether Apple will continue to provide macOS updates for Intel Macs. According to recent reports, Apple has discontinued support for some Intel Macs.
The current list of Intel Macs supported by the latest macOS version is as follows:
- 2017 iMac Pro
- 2018 Mac mini
- 2018 MacBook Air
- 2018 MacBook Pro
- 2019 MacBook Air
- 2019 MacBook Pro
