Social media platform Bluesky has officially launched its long-awaited blue tick verification system. The new system will allow users to more easily distinguish real and reliable accounts from fake profiles. In the first phase of the application, verification will only be possible through certain institutions.
Bluesky is switching to the blue tick system
The new system is designed to increase the visibility and reliability of people closely followed by the public, such as journalists, politicians, academics and company representatives, on the platform. The blue tick badge will show that an account is not fake and directly reflects the person or institution it represents.

Instead of directly undertaking the verification task in this process, Bluesky authorizes certain trusted institutions. These institutions can also approve certain accounts within themselves. For example, a reporter within a media organization or an official spokesperson for a company will be able to receive the blue tick badge when verified by the institution they are affiliated with.
The verification process is not limited to institutional approval. Bluesky’s moderation team will review each blue tick application and check for the possibility of fraud. In this way, it will be confirmed that the accounts that receive the badge are truly affiliated with the relevant person or institution.
Individual users cannot currently apply for a blue tick. However, the platform is working to open this verification process to a wider audience. In the near future, a system is planned to be put into effect where users can also apply directly.
