The long-standing leadership race in the electric vehicle market is entering a new phase. Tesla, which completed 2024 with 1.78 million electric vehicle sales, managed to close the year at the top. However, China-based BYD ranked second with a difference of only 1.35 percent in the same period.
BYD may surpass Tesla in the global market
Although Tesla seems to be ahead when looking at the year as a whole, it has been proven with data that BYD has made more sales than Tesla in the last two quarters. As we enter 2025, analyses published by market research company Counterpoint Research indicate that there may be a change in the leadership seat.

Accordingly, BYD may reach a global market share of 15.7 percent during the year and surpass Tesla in the battery electric vehicle segment. The company’s aggressive growth strategy, state-supported production model and advanced technological infrastructure were effective in this change.
The new generation battery technology and charging infrastructure developed by BYD are among the main innovations that draw attention in the sector. The company’s 1,000 kW ultra-fast charging system and 10C batteries that can be charged in seconds surpass existing solutions.
Tesla is experiencing various difficulties. Delays in the introduction of the company’s new models, ongoing disruptions in the global supply chain, and fierce competition have slowed Tesla’s sales momentum considerably.
In addition, Elon Musk’s public political statements negatively affect the brand’s perception, especially in major markets such as the US and Europe. Counterpoint’s data for the first months of 2025 also shows that sales have started to decline in these regions.
All these developments in the electric vehicle market reveal that the balance of power in the sector is being reshaped. So what do you think about this issue? You can share your views with us in the comments section below.
