Google is planning to invest heavily in the world of virtual assistants powered by generative AI. According to new claims, the company will bring new “supercharging” capabilities to Google Assistant, leveraging large language models similar to ChatGPT. This will give it a big advantage over Siri on the iPhone.
Google Assistant to get a major AI upgrade
Google’s foray into artificial intelligence seems to have finally extended to the world of personal assistants. The software giant has begun exploring how to integrate AI technology into Assistant, starting with mobile devices first.
In an internal email sent by Google executives, the Assistant team is focusing on “supercharging” AI capabilities. As a result, some roles on the Assistant team have been removed or replaced by the AI team.
The emergence of productive AIs has reduced demand for virtual assistants. But Google remains optimistic about the future of Assistant. In an email, a VP and Chief Product Officer said that work is underway on how large language models will make Assistant better.
The details of the features to be added to Assistant are unclear. However, similar to Bard, it seems possible for the virtual assistant to get information from the internet and answer questions in natural speech.
It is not known when these features will be available. It is also unclear how users’ privacy will be protected when interacting with advanced AI. But the AI-powered Assistant could overtake Siri by far.
