Currently, OpenAI is experimenting to add long-term memory to ChatGPT. This will enable ChatGPT to remember details between conversations. Users will be able to ask ChatGPT to remember something, see what it remembers, and ask it to forget.
This will enable ChatGPT to remember details
At the moment, this memory feature is only available for testing to a few ChatGPT users. Large language models typically use two types of memory: one type of memory included during training (before distribution) and a context memory that persists throughout the session (conversation history).
Usually, when you start a session with ChatGPT, it forgets what you’ve told it. However, you can change this if you want. Just tell ChatGPT “forget what I said” to reset its memory.
OpenAI hasn’t provided detailed instructions on how to use this feature, but the application reminds us of the Custom Prompts feature introduced in July 2023. This feature will allow users to add custom prompts to the ChatGPT system and thus modify its behavior.
How will ChatGPT remember?
All you need to do is tell ChatGPT that you run a coffee shop or ChatGPT will assume that you’ve talked about it. For instance, it can remember details about your plant-loving child and generate relevant charts or design preschool lesson plans based on your preferences.
Moreover, OpenAI suggests that memories could help ChatGPT Enterprise and Team subscribers collaborate more effectively. Shared team memories could help remember specific document formatting preferences or which programming frameworks your team uses.
How will memory control work?
The inclination to remember information certainly brings privacy implications. The company will provide a “Memory Management” interface allowing you to manage what ChatGPT remembers. OpenAI says, “ChatGPT’s memories evolve with your interactions and are not associated with specific conversations. Deleting a chat does not delete memories; you must delete memories yourself.”
The memory features of ChatGPT are not currently accessible to every ChatGPT account, so we haven’t tried them yet. Access during the testing period is currently randomly distributed among ChatGPT (free and paid) accounts.
