China discovers thorium reserves: Centuries of clean nuclear energy!

Reports from the recently completed study have revealed that the silvery radioactive metal (thorium) could revolutionize global energy production and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Speaking to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), a Beijing geologist, who wished to remain anonymous, explained the significance of the discovery:

“FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY, NATIONS HAVE FOUGHT FOR CONTROL OF FOSSIL FUELS, BUT AN UNLIMITED ENERGY SOURCE IS RIGHT UNDER OUR FEET. EVERY COUNTRY HAS THORIUM. IMAGINE CARGO SHIPS POWERED BY REACTORS THE SIZE OF A CONTAINER CROSSING THE OCEANS WITHOUT REFUELING FOR YEARS.”

Why is thorium so important?

Thorium is an extraordinary element that can produce 200 times more energy than uranium. Unlike uranium reactors, thorium molten salt reactors (TSRs) are compact, require no water cooling, have no risk of core meltdown and produce very little long-lived radioactive waste.

Last year, China approved the construction of the world’s first TMSR plant in the Gobi Desert. This pilot project aims to generate 10 megawatts of electricity and is scheduled to be operational by 2029. Thorium, meanwhile, has the potential to become a clean and sustainable energy source not only for China but for the whole world.
