Google has invested heavily in Chrome OS and Chromebooks in recent years to capture the affordable laptop market. For a long time it was rumored to be developing models with Nvidia graphics cards, even if that was denied. But the company will not compromise on security and new features.
Google Chromebook update support extended to 10 years
Google is expanding its support for Chromebook models. The company, which currently provides security and feature updates for 8 years, announced that this support will be available for 10 years. The company’s move has even made Apple MacBook owners jealous.
Google aims to keep Chromebooks safe longer than competing operating systems. Accordingly, all Chromebooks released in 2021 or later will receive updates for 10 years. This will include the operating system and security packages.
Owners of Chromebooks released before 2021 will also have the option to optionally register their devices to extend support for up to 10 years. The company’s latest decision will allow Chromebooks to be used longer in areas such as schools and businesses.
Security is a top priority for Chrome OS. Releasing a security package every month, Google will be able to keep personal data and systems safe for longer with 10 years of support.
However, whether these devices can be used for 10 years raises a question mark. Since they have relatively low technical specifications, there will be performance losses in 10 years.
