At Game Awards 2023, we saw announcements from many studios. Sega didn’t skip the last event of the year either. The company announced that it plans to revive five retro franchises with new games. In the trailer released at Game Awards 2023; Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage and Golden Axe will be remade.
Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio will be remade
Sega COO Shuji Utsumi announced that they are working on five new projects. While no release date was shared, he said that the games could be released in two years at the earliest. The remakes will reportedly be developed to appeal to both old and new players.
Beyond Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio, Shinobi and Streets of Rage also stand out. It should be noted that movie adaptations are currently being prepared for these two titles. COO Utsumi also said that Sega aims to expand Sonic the Hedgehog to other platforms.
He also mentioned that Sonic will also be in the movie industry. “Sonic showed us that if we create engaging games and worlds, it can inspire other parts of the business like movies,” Utsumi said.
Five titles were featured in the trailer produced by Sega. Emphasizing the iconic styles and gameplay of each series, the company wants to introduce its retro roots to a new generation. It will be exciting to see the return of beloved ’90s franchises in the coming years.
However, we should emphasize that there is no project ready at the moment. We only know that Shinobi, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage and Golden Axe will return to modern platforms.
