Deadpool & Wolverine has started to position itself in the Oscar race. Marvel’s intention is to have Ryan Reynolds in the lead role and Hugh Jackman in the supporting role as one of the frontrunners for the awards.
On the other hand, the same positioning will be used for all the major awards. According to Variety, it will compete in the best comedy or musical category at events like the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics Choice Awards.
Deadpool & Wolverine could make their mark at the Oscars
Deadpool & Wolverine will also aim for nominations in technical categories at the 2025 Academy Awards, including set design, sound and visual effects. The film’s success has been proven worldwide by both Disney and Marvel with the return of Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine, the X-Men’s most beloved character.
In addition, the film is expected to be recognized by the Golden Globes in the recently introduced category of Cinema and Box Office Achievement. Added last year, the category honors the year’s highest-grossing and most critically acclaimed films.
Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie, which won this award last year, was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture. To qualify for this category, films must gross at least $150 million, of which $100 million must come from the US, or reach similar digital streaming figures accepted by industry standards.
The 2016 original Deadpool, directed by Tim Miller, grossed over $780 million worldwide, earning critical and audience acclaim.
