Apple’s newest line of silicon chips for the Mac arrives just a year after the launch of the M2 chip in 2022! Perhaps no one expected a new chip to arrive in such a short time, but Apple wanted to make a surprise. So, the real question is: Does it make more sense to buy a MacBook with an M2 processor or an M3 processor? Let’s try to answer the question together!
M2 chip vs M3 chip! Which one makes more sense to buy?
The chip series M, which Apple calls the beginning of legends, was first introduced at the WWDC 2020 event in June 2020. The M1 chip, which would bring the end of the Intel series processors used in MacBooks at that time, was followed with curiosity by many users. In the following periods, the MacBook series released with the M1 chip were sold like crazy.
M1, which was produced in 2020 with the 5 nm production process, Apple’s last generation processor architecture, also has the distinction of being the first personal computer chip produced by Apple. After 2 years, Apple announced the M2 chip and 1 year later, the M3 chip. We can say that we experienced a rapid transition process.
With the M3 chip introduced this year, users who want to own a new MacBook are a bit confused. “Would it make more sense to buy a MacBook with an M2 or M3 processor?” The question kept many users busy. First of all, it is necessary to point out that Apple has now jumped from the 5 nm production process to 3 nm production. Because this means an increased amount of transistors on the chip by 25 percent, thus greatly increasing the chip capabilities.
Benchmark tests also point to this progress, as the M3 outperforms the M2 chip by approximately 17% in operations requiring a single core and by approximately 21% in operations requiring multiple cores. In GPU performance, the M3 shows a non-negligible increase of approximately 15% compared to the M2 chip.
The M3 chip offers a completely new GPU architecture. This architecture also includes “Dynamic Caching” that optimizes GPU memory allocation and usage, adapting to changing task demands in real time. In this way, maximum performance is achieved with minimum power. Thus, the life of the device is increased and problems such as overheating are prevented.
Apart from this, we should also point out that the M3 chip is more capable than the M2 chip in terms of power transfer and battery savings, with a generation difference. When it comes to price points, you can buy a MacBook Air with an M2 chip at prices starting from 999 dolars, while you can buy a MacBook Pro with an M3 chip at 1599 dolars.
