In the automotive sector, where autonomous driving technologies are becoming increasingly widespread, a serious problem caused by lidar sensors on phone cameras has come to light. Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) systems use laser beams in near-infrared wavelengths to scan the environment and detect objects. However, these invisible laser beams can cause permanent damage, especially when they come into direct contact with the advanced camera sensors of smartphones.

Lidar sensors in vehicles damage phone cameras

A recent incident with Volvo’s electric SUV model EX90 has concretely demonstrated this risk. While a user was recording the lidar unit on the roof of the EX90 with an iPhone 16 Pro Max, the phone’s main camera suffered irreversible pixel damage.

Permanent burn-like stains in red, purple and pink tones occurred on the camera sensor. The device was replaced under AppleCare, but the same solution is not possible for users who do not have such a warranty.

In the official statement made by Volvo, it was stated that the incident was not exceptional and that similar damage could occur when lidar beams came into direct contact with camera sensors. The company warns users not to point their cameras directly at lidar sensors.

The laser intensity increases, especially at close ranges, which increases the risk of damaging camera sensors. According to the statement, shooting from a distance and using a lens filter if possible can help protect the devices.
