The off-Earth manufacturing capsule, developed by Varda Space Industries and evaluated at the Utah Test and Training Range, brought back a remarkable package containing antiviral drugs cultivated in the microgravity environment of low Earth orbit (LEO) to Earth.
What is the Purpose of Drugs Produced in Space’s Microgravity?
Founded by former SpaceX employees and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, Varda Space Industries aims to develop drugs and other products in space as the cost of sending payloads to space decreases. These products are then returned to Earth through the company’s re-entry capsules.
Varda CEO Will Bruey states: “We are producing drugs in space. Eliminating gravity allows us to create medications that we couldn’t otherwise produce on Earth. Gravity is like a parameter. If you put a temperature knob on an oven, you create a world of new recipes and foods you can make. Similarly, if you can change gravity, you can alter the chemical process for drug formulations.”
The microgravity environment in space is thought to help in producing drugs with more perfect crystal structures, thereby potentially increasing their shelf life and effectiveness. Ritonavir, an antiviral medication, was developed as part of Varda’s mission.
This drug is used in the treatment of HIV and hepatitis C. Upon the capsule’s return to Earth, the medication will be transported back to Varda’s facilities in Los Angeles to be sent to a commercial partner.
