With the farewell to internal combustion engines in these days, electric vehicles are spreading rapidly. The number of electric cars is increasing every day, and brands are aiming to speed up production. However, the increase in electric vehicle production also brings some problems.
Electric vehicles are facing a battery supply problem
As known, the ongoing chip crisis has had a significant negative impact on the automotive industry, just like in all technological devices. While the chip crisis is slowly losing its effect, electric cars are now facing a new problem: the battery crisis.
As the production of electric cars increases day by day, brands are facing difficulties in battery production and supply. Companies like Ford, GM, and Porsche highlighted the challenges in battery production and cost issues in their second-quarter results.
Ford CEO Jim Farley pointed out the price competition initiated by Tesla, stating that this situation has a negative impact on them. The company stated that they cannot offer sufficient discounts for their electric vehicles because they do not have a production line like Tesla’s. They emphasized that they face problems, especially due to battery issues.
On the other hand, GM CEO Mary Barra also stated that they want to accelerate electric vehicle production, but due to the battery supply problems, they may not be able to achieve this goal. The halt of production at one of the company’s facilities in Canada is also attributed to battery supply problems.
Porsche is also among the brands facing battery supply issues for its electric cars. CEO Oliver Blume, who mentioned that they need to resolve the issues in battery supply to reach their goals for this year, expressed that battery companies face problems with raw materials and production capacity.
As the competition intensifies among brands in the electric vehicle race, it is expected that there will be an increase in the demand for vital raw materials for batteries and problems on production lines in the coming days.
