Mercedes-Benz’s electric G-Class model, the G580 EQ Technology, has been disappointing with its sales figures since its launch. Only 1,450 G580s have been sold worldwide by the end of April 2025.
The electric Mercedes G-Class saw less demand than expected
The model was limited to sales of only 58 units in China, which has great potential in the electric vehicle market. This number was recorded as 61 in South Korea. There were no sales in the US market, which is much more decisive for Mercedes.

Mercedes did not announce an official sales target for the G580. However, the company’s statement that “our sales are as planned” did not coincide with the figures in the field. In various analyses on the subject, the main reasons for the low performance are sought in the technical infrastructure.
The G580 was built on the ladder-type chassis of the internal combustion G-Class instead of a new-generation electric vehicle platform. This preference increased the weight of the battery and the vehicle, while preventing the provision of advantages such as a large interior volume, which are among the primary expectations of electric vehicle users.
The chassis of the G580 weighs 350 kg, while the armor plate protecting the battery weighs 58 kg. While the total weight excluding the battery exceeds 400 kg, the total weight of the vehicle reaches 3.1 tons with the 116 kWh capacity battery cells. In contrast, the fact that its carrying capacity is only 415 kg has been highly criticized by users.
The range of the vehicle is also a target of criticism. According to WLTP data, the G580, which offers a range of 473 kilometers, fell short of expectations for users with its starting price of 150,000 euros. This range, which does not reach the performance and efficiency level expected from a high-end SUV, made it difficult to choose the G580, especially in markets where competition is intense.
