Elon Musk’s startup, xAI, has introduced Grok 3, hailed as the “smartest artificial intelligence on Earth.” The live demonstration attracted more than 100,000 viewers, marking a significant milestone in the AI industry.
Grok 3 has demonstrated superior performance in various evaluations. In tests like AIME, which assess mathematical problem-solving abilities, and GPQA, focusing on PhD-level physics, biology, and chemistry questions, Grok 3 has surpassed GPT-4o. Additionally, an early version of Grok 3 excelled in Chatbot Arena, a platform where AI models compete, and users vote on the best responses.
Grok is whatever you want him to be
During the Q&A session following the launch, Musk addressed audience inquiries about Grok’s characteristics. When asked about Grok’s gender, Musk responded, “Grok is whatever you want him to be,” adding confidently, “People are going to fall in love with Grok. That’s 1,000% likely.”
Access to Grok 3 begins with Premium Plus subscribers on X, who will be the first to experience the new AI. Musk also announced a separate subscription tier called Super Grok for enthusiasts seeking early access to new features. Priced at $30 per month or $300 annually, Super Grok offers additional benefits, including enhanced queries in the new DeepSearch engine and unlimited image generation.
Grok 3 outperforms OpenAI
Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 mini Reasoning. These models are designed to methodically “think through” problems, similar to other “reasoning” models like OpenAI’s o3-mini and DeepSeek’s R1. This approach allows to carefully evaluate problems before providing solutions, reducing common pitfalls associated with AI responses. Notably, xAI claims that Grok Reasoning outperforms the best version of o3-mini, known as o3-mini high, in several assessments, including the AIME 2025 math test.

The inspiration behind the name “Grok” originates from Robert Heinlein’s novel “Stranger in a Strange Land,” where the term signifies a profound and complete understanding. Musk’s vision for creating the most advanced AI led to the rapid development of a dedicated data center. Within 12 days, the team established a facility housing 100,000 GPUs, doubling its capacity to 200,000 GPUs in just 92 days. This massive infrastructure, located in Memphis, serves as the training ground for Grok 3.
The chatbot operates on xAI’s Colossus supercomputer, which utilizes over 100,000 hours of Nvidia GPU time for training AI models. Remarkably, this system was constructed in just over eight months. To further support computational demands, xAI plans to finalize a $5 billion agreement with Dell for AI servers equipped with NVIDIA GB200 semiconductors.
Grok 3 represents a family of models rather than a singular entity. The Grok 3 mini offers faster response times, albeit with a slight trade-off in accuracy. While not all models are immediately available, xAI has begun rolling them out, with more releases scheduled in the coming days. Musk emphasizes Grok 3’s commitment to truth-seeking, stating, “This is the most truth-seeking AI ever, even if that truth sometimes runs counter to what is politically correct.”
The launch of Grok 3 signifies a pivotal advancement in artificial intelligence, with xAI positioning itself at the forefront of AI innovation.
