Fairphone has just released a refreshed version of its Fairbuds XL over-ear headphones staying true to its modular, repair-friendly design but adding three notable upgrades. With better sound, smarter power management, and extended warranty coverage, the new Fairbuds XL keep their eco-conscious edge while stepping up performance.
Fairbuds XL upgrades focus on sound, battery, and longevity

The most significant change in the new model is a set of improved 40 mm “premium” paper dynamic drivers. While the size remains the same as the original, Fairphone claims the new drivers offer richer bass and more detailed mids and highs. Even better, owners of the 2023 Fairbuds XL will be able to buy and install the upgraded drivers a rare move in an industry built on non-replaceable parts.
Aside from sound, the updated Fairbuds XL also introduce two more upgrades:
- Automatic shut-off after 30 minutes of inactivity, helping to preserve battery life
- Extended warranty, now covering the headphones for three years instead of two
Modular design remains the Fairbuds XL’s standout feature
What hasn’t changed is the core philosophy. The Fairbuds XL are still one of the most modular over-ear headphones on the market. Users can easily swap out:
- The battery
- The headband
- The internal electronics
- The cable connecting the ear cups
This means repairs and upgrades can be done without tossing the entire device fitting perfectly with Fairphone’s e-waste-neutral approach.
Sustainability without sacrificing performance
The updated Fairbuds XL continue to support Bluetooth 5.1, Multipoint connectivity, aptX HD codec, and active noise cancellation (ANC). Battery life holds steady at 20 hours with ANC on. Fairphone says the headphones are made with 92% recycled aluminum, and the plastic and fabric elements now feature a slightly new texture.
Meanwhile, production uses 100% renewable energy, reinforcing the brand’s sustainability promise.
A small refresh with a big message
With the 2025 refresh, Fairphone didn’t reinvent the Fairbuds XL but it didn’t need to. By boosting sound quality, adding smarter battery management, and increasing durability, it made a strong case for sustainable audio tech that doesn’t fall behind.
For those tired of disposable gear, Fairbuds XL proves you don’t need to compromise between performance and planet.
