General Motors (GM) has announced that it is expanding its decision on electric vehicles. The company will not include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its future gasoline-powered vehicles. GM’s decision stems from a new AI voice assistant powered by Google Gemini, which will be integrated into new vehicles under the Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC brands.

General Motors to Use Gemini-Powered Assistant

The automaker is rolling out a Google Gemini-powered AI assistant in its vehicles starting next year. This new assistant will allow drivers to interact with their vehicles as naturally as they would with a passenger.

GM also plans to introduce its own custom-designed AI in vehicles in the future. This AI will adapt to the vehicle’s intelligence and personal preferences with user permission, and all will be connected through the OnStar system.

GM Product Manager Sterling Anderson stated that the company’s in-house infotainment option offers a much more immersive environment and can do much more than Apple CarPlay.

General Motors had already switched to an infotainment system called Ultifi in its electric vehicles. GM believes the move to remove Apple CarPlay provides access to the direct integrations and information needed for its electric vehicle lineup, and that the in-house, unified solution is a better option for consumers.
