The rapid spread of artificial intelligence systems has caused a major increase in energy consumption by technology companies. Google, which is turning to high-capacity energy sources to meet this increase, announced that it will build three new nuclear facilities in the US. The company signed an agreement with energy company Elementl Power to implement the project.
Google will build new nuclear energy facilities
This new initiative, which Google will finance, aims to provide a solution to the increasing energy needs of artificial intelligence and data centers. It was stated that each nuclear facility will have a total installed capacity of 600 megawatts.
The amount of investment in the project or information on where the facilities will be built in the US has not yet been shared. Elementl Power plans to increase its total nuclear energy capacity to 10 gigawatts by 2035.

Google took its first step into nuclear energy last year with an agreement it made with Kairos Power. Within the scope of this agreement, small modular reactors (SMR) will be built and a total nuclear energy production of 500 megawatts was targeted. The company’s new initiative will be a larger-scale version of this strategy.
Tech companies’ shift toward nuclear energy is not limited to Google. Other companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are also signing similar agreements to meet the energy needs of their data centers.
