Ilya Sachkov, the co-founder of the globally known cybersecurity firm, Group-IB, has been sentenced to a 14-year prison term in Russia, accused of treason. This surprising development came to light on Wednesday, as reported by an AFP journalist in the Moscow court.
A secretive trial leading to a severe verdict
Following an enigmatic trial behind closed doors, Sachkov was found guilty under Article 275 of Russia’s Criminal Code. The severity of the sentence has sent shockwaves through the cybersecurity community, not only in Russia but globally.
Group-IB, founded by Sachkov in 2003, has gained recognition for its remarkable work in detecting and preventing cyberattacks. The firm has collaborated with several global institutions, including Interpol, enhancing its international reputation.
Charges and reactions: Shrouded in mystery
While the prosecutors had initially sought an 18-year sentence, Sachkov’s ultimate conviction to 14 years in a strict penal colony has led to an uproar among his supporters. Despite the gravity of the situation, Sachkov displayed an air of tranquility, entering the court donning casual attire, jeans and a black t-shirt, and even managing a smile.
Although Sachkov’s trial details remain classified, Russian media have reported that he stands accused of sharing classified information with foreign intelligence. Notably, the charges levied against Sachkov bear no relation to his professional activities at Group-IB.
Firm faith amidst adversity
Despite the sentencing, Group-IB, currently headquartered in Singapore, expressed unwavering confidence in Sachkov’s innocence. The company pledged to keep its mission of fighting against cybercrime, maintaining its stride in the face of adversity.
Sachkov’s remarkable journey from starting Group-IB at the tender age of 17, to being featured in Forbes “30 under 30” list of tech entrepreneurs in 2016, and receiving an “innovative breakthrough” award from President Vladimir Putin in 2019, makes this development even more notable.
