The Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) and HAVELSAN have launched a project to reduce costs and time in oil and natural gas exploration. The AI-powered system, developed jointly by the two institutions, quickly and accurately identifies formations in wells.
HAVELSAN will facilitate oil and gas exploration.
The system analyzes rock samples taken during well drilling using imaging technologies and interprets them instantly with an AI model. This allows for instantaneous identification of the rock layer in which the well is progressing. This results in significantly faster results than existing methods and prevents wasteful time.

AI technology increases operational efficiency, reduces errors resulting from inaccurate formation interpretations, and prevents unexpected cost increases. Problems such as incorrect progress, faulty mud programs, and service plans are minimized. Furthermore, adverse geological conditions are detected early.
The AI model, currently in the pilot phase, is observed to deliver highly accurate results. TPAO will complete the field integration of the system in wells to be drilled this year and next, and will expand its use across all drilling sites.
This project not only saves cost and time, but also makes a significant contribution to Turkey’s goal of energy independence. This artificial intelligence system, developed with domestic and national technology, makes oil and gas exploration more efficient and facilitates the discovery of new reserves.
The TPAO and HAVELSAN collaboration stands out as a concrete example of Turkey’s transfer of its defense industry capabilities to the civilian sector. This success indicates that the use of domestic technology will become widespread in similar projects across various sectors in the future.
