Thinking of upgrading your iPad in 2024? If you can help it, you might want to wait for upgrades to the full range planned for this year. However, there may be some situations where it makes sense to buy a new iPad now. Read on for buying advice, what we’re expecting from Apple’s next-generation tablets, how the current lineup compares if you need a tablet right now, and more.
How sensible is it to buy a new iPad now?
As you’re probably aware, Apple hasn’t released a single new iPad in 2023. The last major updates to the series were made in October 2022. Looking ahead, we expect the new iPad Pro and Air models to launch this spring – around March.
Refurbished iPad and iPad mini hardware later in the year. Here’s what you should do:
- iPad Pro – wait until March if you can
- iPad Air – wait until March if you can
- iPad (10) – maybe – iPad 11 not expected until late 2024
- iPad mini (6) – maybe – iPad mini 7 not expected until late 2024
If you know you want one of these models, wait until March if possible. You can either take advantage of having the latest and greatest model or get one of the previous generations at a bigger discount. If for some reason you can’t wait or find a good discount, the main things you’ll be missing out on with the new iPad Pro are the move to OLED displays and the latest M-series chip.
The new generation iPad Air is expected to be offered with a new 12.9-inch option and upgraded Apple Silicon, in addition to the 10.9-inch size. Major changes are not expected in the next generation iPad and iPad mini, but they will probably come with upgraded chips such as the A16 Bionic (iPad 10 currently has A14, iPad mini 6 has A15 Bionic).
Depending on whether you can wait until late 2024 (potentially the fall), and if processor upgrades aren’t important to you, it might make sense to buy a current-gen iPad or iPad mini now if the price is right.
