Huawei is poised to become the latest major manufacturer to join the ultra-thin smartphone trend that has recently become popular in the tech world. According to leaks, the company is currently intensively testing a new phone that is claimed to be even thinner than the upcoming iPhone Air. Initial leaks from a Chinese blogger suggest that this new device will be part of the Mate 80 series and will likely be called the “Mate 80 Air.”

Some details about the specifications of this ambitious phone have also leaked. The upcoming ultra-thin model is expected to be powered by Huawei’s next-generation Kirin 9030 5G chipset. It is also expected to offer users options of up to 2TB of storage.

To maintain its slim design, the phone will reportedly not have a physical SIM card slot, but will only support eSIM technology. Huawei is also reportedly developing a dedicated eSIM management feature, which is expected to be available towards the end of 2025.
Huawei’s primary goal is to produce one of the thinnest phones on the market, surpassing the Apple iPhone Air, which measures 5.5 mm thick. Despite such a thin design, the company aims to maintain user experience and is therefore taking innovative steps in battery technology.
It plans to utilize innovative silicon-carbon battery technology to deliver better battery life than many of its competitors. This ultra-thin device, currently in testing, is expected to be released in the fourth quarter (October-December) of 2025.
