Huawei appears poised to make another leap forward in its foldable phone lineup. It’s reportedly moving directly to the Mate X8 instead of the Mate X7. Early leaks suggest this new foldable flagship will come with 20GB of RAM and feature a significantly revised design.
Mate X7 Skipped, Accessory Manufacturers Confirm
Just like the jump from the Mate X3 to the Mate X5, Huawei appears poised to ditch the “7” moniker entirely. Accessory manufacturers are already preparing screen protectors and cases labeled “Mate X8.” This further bolsters claims that the Mate X7 will never exist.

The Mate X8 is rumored to launch with 20GB of RAM, a significant jump from the 16GB of RAM in its predecessor, the Mate X6. This is a significant increase for a foldable phone and is clearly aimed at users who rely heavily on heavy-duty apps and on-device artificial intelligence (AI) features. If this leak is true, the Mate X8 could be one of the highest-capacity foldable phones on the market at launch.
This massive RAM capacity is rumored to be paired with Huawei’s new Kirin 9030 chip, the successor to the Kirin 9020 chipset found in the Mate X6. The Mate 80 series is also rumored to offer the same RAM configuration and the Kirin 9030.
Leader Fixed Focus Digital claims the Mate X8 will feature a “completely revamped” design compared to last year’s model. While the source claims one of the concept sketches they shared is close to reality, they didn’t specify which one is accurate. This hints at a significant change, particularly in the camera design.
Many “book-style” foldable phones have already been released by 2025, including the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Vivo X Fold5, Honor Magic V5, Oppo Find N5, and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7. Even Xiaomi is changing its name and planning the Xiaomi 17 Fold in early 2026.
Huawei, however, appears to be taking a different route: skip a number, increase the RAM, and introduce a new look. If these leaks prove true, the Mate X8 could be one of the most interesting foldable phones of next year.
